OUR STORY

Learn About Our Journey

Welcome to Bronco Racing - Santa Clara FSAE, a first year Electric Racing team based in the Silicon Valley. Our team is currently designing and building an electric, Formula 1-style race car to compete in the Formula SAE competition in June of 2025.

Our journey started from a small group of students with a passion for racing and a commitment to the engineering design process. After taking time to formally establish our presence at SCU, we restructured our team to become more efficient,  organized, and set clear guidelines for our team. We are now well on our way to building our first ever electric race car!

We are proud to offer hands-on learning experiences for engineering students through designing, prototyping, and building our car. Our team aims to produce high-quality engineers and contribute to advancements in the broader mechanical engineering and automotive field. Our core values are centered around our dedication to our team, the sport, and the working with our hands. Join us on this exciting journey and experience the thrill of racing with Santa Clara FSAE.

What is FSAE?

Formula SAE is a Collegiate Design Series competition hosted by SAE International (Society of Automotive Engineers). They organize various engineering competitions designed to formally challenge students while enriching their designing, building, and professional skills. FSAE/Formula Student is comprised of hundreds of universities across the globe who design, build and compete an open wheel race car in the span of one academic year. Both combustion and electric vehicles are built and raced at their respective competitions.

The Competition

The FSAE competition is held annually in Brooklyn, Michigan with the Combustion vehicles competing in May and Electric vehicles competing in June. The competition is broken down into two main categories: static events and dynamic events.

Static Events

Business Presentation

Teams market their team & car as if they were pitching to real companies. Judges will examine how well your team has built a business capable of acquiring sponsors and creating an organized team.

Cost Report

Teams present the total cost of the car, including all parts and manufacturing costs, where money was sourced from, and how it was allocated to various subsystems and components.

Design Presentation & Scrutineering

The most crucial static event in which teams share how they went about designing their car, including major design decisions with justifications. Judges scrutinize teams' designs and dive deep into engineering principles, awarding teams with well designed cars the highest number of points

Dynamic Events

Acceleration

See how fast your car can accelerate in a straight line.

Autocross

Drive your car around one 800 meter length lap as fast as possible. Push your whole car to its limits in this single lap.

Skidpad

See how fast your car can drive in a figure eight pattern.

Endurance

This is the longest and most important--how fast you can complete 22km of racing. Push your car to its endurance limits and get judged based on how efficient your car is (how much energy is used vs. time)
